Parade canceled for lack of participants; commissioners emphasize other Fourth of July programming

Millville officials said they canceled the city's Fourth of July parade because of low sign-ups and insufficient staffing to safely staff parade intersections, not because of a security threat.

Commissioner Taylor, acting as public safety director, said event organizers reviewed entries and staffing needs and found only about a dozen signed entries with two floats and few marching bands or outside emergency-service participants. Taylor said a properly staffed route would have required a minimum of 16 officers just for intersections, not counting driveway closures, and that organizers could not reliably secure the necessary manpower.

"This decision to cancel the parade was not made solely by myself, although the final decision was mine as public safety director," Taylor said, adding that the concern was staffing and participant levels rather than any specific threat. Taylor urged residents to enjoy other holiday events and to take precautions for an expected heat wave.

Other commissioners promoted the city's lakeside fireworks, vendor events and community programming, and noted additions such as an approved inflatable water slide and a schedule of family activities. Officials also reminded residents that trash and recycling schedules would not change for the holiday and asked residents to stay hydrated.

Commissioners said the event team and parks staff worked hard on programming and that attendees should focus on the broader holiday activities rather than social-media speculation about the parade cancellation.
