City announces FY27 Heritage Preservation Grant; applications open July 7

Christina Kufa, a project coordinator in Austin’s arts, culture, music and entertainment office, told the Historic Landmarks Commission that the fiscal year 2027 Heritage Preservation Grant opens July 7 and will close Aug. 18. The grant supports place‑based projects that preserve historic sites, share local stories and boost Austin’s creative economy.
Kufa described two project categories: capital improvement projects, citing the Southgate Lewis House (1501 East 12th Street) as an example undergoing foundation stabilization, accessible walkways, HVAC and exterior repairs; and heritage events, pointing to the Black History Bike Ride that received a FY26 grant to host history rides highlighting Black historic sites across the city. She said awardees will share visiting hours and program information on their websites.
Staff will hold virtual open office hours every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon during the application period and will provide interpretation and translation upon request. Kufa encouraged interested applicants to book one‑on‑one meetings with staff.
The commission did not take formal action on the announcement; it was provided as public information and placed in the meeting backup materials.
