The Demorest City Council on July 17 approved a proposed list of projects for the countywide SPLOST VIII referendum and authorized submission of intergovernmental agreements needed by the county for scheduling and advertisement.
City Manager Mark Musselwhite presented the draft list and timeline the county requires. The proposed expenditures the council approved sum to $2,456,309 and are broken down in the city record as: Public safety facilities, equipment or vehicles — $1,211,309 (including $511,000 for police vehicles and $700,000 for two fire trucks); Parks facilities or equipment — $200,000; Roads, streets, bridges and sidewalks — $250,000; City Hall facilities, equipment or vehicles — $200,000; Public utilities facilities, equipment or vehicles — $595,000.
Musselwhite told the council the county requires approved local project lists and signed intergovernmental agreements before its advertisement process; the county’s calendar requires the city to submit those materials to meet the county’s internal deadline so the county can place the ad in the newspaper. Councilman Andrew Ferguson moved to approve the proposed list, Councilman Jimmy Davis seconded, and the motion passed by voice vote (4-0).
The vote authorizes the city to proceed with the local approvals needed for SPLOST VIII planning; final project inclusion in the county referendum and the timing of any county-level advertising are subject to county procedures and deadlines.
