SMIF tells Spring Grove council it can help childcare initiatives and requests city donation

Aaron Johnson, representing the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), gave a presentation to the Spring Grove City Council on June 17 about SMIF’s work in Houston County and the organization's ability to support childcare initiatives, gap loans for entrepreneurs and small-town grants.
Johnson described programs that can assist communities with childcare solutions and cited past grants such as the Paint the Town program that previously benefited Spring Grove. He asked the council to consider a donation; "in years past, the City of Spring Grove donated over $1,000 a year and each year has now dwindled down to $200," Johnson said, and he noted SMIF efforts often return dollars to communities through grants and programming.
Clerk/Administrator Jana Elton asked whether SMIF could act as a fiscal agent to help the city obtain a building; Johnson said he would investigate how much assistance SMIF could provide. Council Member Trent Turner said the donation request could be discussed at an upcoming budget meeting and the council concurred.
The council took no formal donation vote at the meeting; the request will be considered during the scheduled budget discussions.
