Granite County to bill organizer after classic bike race used county roads without permit

Granite County commissioners moved to send a bill to the organizer of a classic bike race that used county roads this year without submitting the required county encroachment permit.
Sheriff Rico Barkel told the board the organizer had bypassed the commission and used county roads; the sheriff said his office typically supports events when proper permits, insurance and coordination are in place. Commissioners said they had asked the race organizers in previous years to come in for permitting and that this year the organizers proceeded without following that process.
The board approved a motion to invoice the organizer for the standard encroachment-permit application fee (the county indicated a fee level of about $200) and said that future events must submit proper permits, provide insurance documentation, and coordinate signage and traffic control with county staff and the sheriff’s office or risk denial.
Commissioners noted the practical enforcement challenge — events sometimes occur before the commission can review — but said failure to follow the permit process this year justified a billing and a stronger stance next year.
