Spring Grove approves mercury minimization and phosphorus management plans for wastewater treatment facility

The Spring Grove City Council on Nov. 19 approved a Mercury Minimization Plan and a Phosphorus Management Plan for the city’s wastewater treatment facility following a presentation by consulting engineers from WHKS.
City Engineer Tim Hruska and WHKS project manager Emma Nollenberger reviewed year-to-year fluctuations in wastewater influent levels. Hruska said the city saw a significant spike in 2023 that was large for Spring Grove but remained below typical limits when compared with other cities; current levels are below average. He attributed fluctuations in part to changes in what businesses and households discharge into the system and said monitoring and treatment will continue as needed.
Council Member Trent Turner moved to approve both plans; Council Member Karen Folstad seconded and the motions carried unanimously. The council did not attach additional conditions in the meeting record. City staff will continue routine monitoring and implement the plans as outlined by WHKS.
