The Marquette County Board of Adjustment voted 3‑0 on April 30 to grant David and Donna Stapleton a variance to construct a deck at a reduced setback of 56 feet from the ordinary high‑water mark of Tuttle Lake.
Mary Walters, chair of the Marquette County Board of Adjustment, summarized the Stapletons’ application and the supporting materials before the board discussed the proposal with the applicants and viewed a submitted video. Jean Potter explained hearing procedures and the process for appealing a Board of Adjustment decision.
The variance request sought relief under Section 7.2 of the Marquette Code of Ordinances, Chapter 63 (Shoreland Protection), for property described as unrecorded Lot 10 Tuttle Lake Plat, part of Government Lot 5 (Doc# 325489), Sec. 22 T17N R10E, Town of Crystal Lake, with a site address of W2720 S Tuttle Lake Rd. The board noted site constraints including limited lot size and locations of the septic system and well. The proposed deck also includes one of two egress points for the dwelling.
Board member Lance Achterberg moved to approve the application with a condition that the applicants implement shoreline erosion control and revegetation of disturbed areas during construction under the guidance of the Marquette County Land & Water Conservation Department; Mike Johnson seconded. The motion carried 3‑0. The board cited no impact to the shoreland area or neighboring properties, noting nearby properties have similar setbacks.
No members of the public attended or spoke during the public hearing. Potter recorded that there were no in‑person or remote public comments.
The board’s action is a formal variance approval subject to the stated construction and shoreline‑protection condition. Jean Potter announced the next Board of Adjustment meeting for May 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in the courthouse Public Safety Room. The meeting adjourned at 1:20 p.m.
