River Middle School students propose safety handrails for bus ramp

“We did this legacy project in February. The need and inspiration for our legacy project is that safety matters at RMS and handrails will reduce injuries at RMS,” Burkner said. The students outlined a plan to install two 10-foot steel rails and one 5-foot rail, described the rails as durable and easy to install, and provided an itemized budget totaling $650. They said the legacy-project allocation they were working from was $1,000, leaving an estimated $350 unspent if the district approved their plan.
Board members asked logistical questions about where the rails would be purchased and how installation would be handled. The students were encouraged to provide their written materials to district staff; board members said they would forward the documentation to the superintendent and to maintenance for review, but made no commitment to immediate installation.
The presentation concluded with applause and a request from the students for follow-up. The board did not take formal action on the proposal during the meeting; any next steps depend on staff review of the written plan and available funding.
