The Cerro Gordo County Board approved a temporary closure of a dead-end road near the county airport to meet the safety-zone requirements for two back-to-back aerobatic events this summer.
Dave Sims, a presenter, told the board the first event is a regional aerobatic competition Aug. 13–16 and the second is the International World Aerobatic Championship, with practice flights Aug. 17–23 and the competition Aug. 24–Sept. 2. "We are requesting to close that section of that dead end section of road basically from August 13th through September 2nd," Sims said.
Board members were told that property owners on the road had been contacted and that event organizers would provide barricades and maintain access for owners who needed to leave. Sims said organizers would coordinate access on request and that the closure should have "no impact to the county." A motion to approve the request passed by voice vote.
The closure replicates a similar, shorter closure the county allowed last year for an aerobatic competition, Sims said. The board did not set additional conditions beyond the organizer’s assurance to provide barricades and homeowner access.
The board moved on after the vote; the next procedural action listed on the agenda was setting dates for other public hearings and bids.
