Ulster County launches zero-waste stakeholder survey; compost and reuse project updates shared

The Energy, Environment & Sustainability Committee announced the launch of a zero-waste stakeholder survey released to the public June 26, 2026 to inform a county zero-waste policy document. The consultant who helped craft the survey received an additional $1,900 for the work, and the survey will remain open through July 26, with a QR code and links available on county channels.
Director Ryder said the survey is intended to gather broad stakeholder input to finalize guidance for future resolutions and to inform the county’s sustainable purchasing work. "This is meant to go out to a wide range of stakeholders," Ryder said, adding the committee and staff will promote the survey and that the consultant will deliver a final draft after the comment period.
Ryder also reported program updates: screened bulk compost inventory is nearing availability for public bulk sales; recent household hazardous waste events served 285 residents (bringing two-event totals to 562 for the year); Global Energy has reduced pricing, allowing staff to present board options and possibly move forward to a design decision; and the repower/reuse project remains in site search and may split functions across more than one site.
What’s next: The survey deadline is July 26, 2026. Staff will promote the survey on social media and work with legislative staff to encourage responses. Compost sales and Global Energy project decisions will proceed through normal procurement and board-review processes.
