Park committee hears lifeguard staffing update; second lifeguarded beach possible

City Administrator and Special Counsel Dan Madsen told the Deephaven Park Committee on Jan. 6 that about 12 of last summer’s 14 beach patrol lifeguards plan to return and that staff have begun marketing open positions for this summer. Madsen said the city could consider opening a second lifeguarded beach if hiring yields sufficient personnel, naming Robinson and Sandy as potential locations.
Madsen said the city wants a minimum of two lifeguards on site at any given time and that Sandy Beach “may be too small” to accommodate that staffing model. To manage staffing limitations, he said officials may limit lifeguard hours and could permit only one lifeguard to be active in the water during staffed periods.
Committee members did not take formal action; the update was presented for information and staff will continue recruitment and planning. The Committee did not set a schedule or make a staffing decision at the meeting; next steps will depend on hiring outcomes and operational review by staff.
