Council transfers $1.2 million in Transnet funds to citywide left-turn safety upgrades

The City Council unanimously approved a resolution to amend the Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP) allocation and transfer $1.2 million in Transnet local-street funds to support the Citywide Protected Left Turn Enhancements project.
Assistant Director Martha Juarez explained that the city intends to use the reallocated amount to close a funding gap on a federally funded Highway Safety Improvement Grant project that is largely designed and ready for bidding. She described the improvements as intersection-focused work — installing or upgrading signals and adding left-turn pockets at corridors such as 8th, 18th, Plaza Boulevard, Sweetwater and Roosevelt — to reduce crash risk and improve traffic safety.
A member of the public questioned whether the $1.2 million figure represented countywide totals; staff clarified the table in the report is shown in thousands and the city's allocation is $1.2 million. Councilmembers sought assurances the transfer would not affect the resurfacing program already under way; staff said the resurfacing contract was awarded and work is scheduled to continue as planned.
Council voted to adopt the resolution unanimously and directed staff to proceed with allocation and bid scheduling for the protected-left-turn enhancements.
