D.J. explained how per-diem funding works and what comes next: "Per diem positions… come out of the part-time salary pool; we could have 40 per-diem fire marshals, but we only have X amount of dollars, like $50,000," D.J. said, adding that appointees will proceed through the town's background-check and pre-employment processes.
A commissioner moved to appoint the recommended candidates; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote (recorded as three "ayes"). Meeting discussion noted the roles are hourly, without town benefits, and that payroll and personnel processing will be handled by town staff.
The board did not identify the individual who moved or seconded the motion on the record. The appointees' residences and prior service were noted during the presentation: Petrucelli lives in Hampton and Chase is retired from the Southington Fire Department and lives in Berlin.
The appointees are expected to complete town hiring steps before work assignments are scheduled. The board did not set a public start date for either per-diem employee.
