Board approves annual healthy food certification and narrow exception for event sales

The East Windsor School District Board of Education approved its annual Healthy Food Certification required under Connecticut law and adopted a related motion defining narrow exceptions for sales of foods that do not meet state nutrition standards.
Under the first motion, the board certified compliance with the Connecticut nutritional standards published by the State Department of Education for the period July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, as required by CGS 10-215f. The certification covers foods sold separately from reimbursable school meals across all school-related sources, including cafeterias, fundraising activities and school stores.
The board also approved a second motion allowing the sale of foods that do not meet the nutritional standards and beverages not listed in CGS 10-221q only if three conditions are met: the sale is connected with an event occurring at the end of the regular school day or on the weekend; the sale takes place at the location of that event; and the items are not sold from a vending machine or school store. Examples of qualifying events discussed at the meeting included after-hours athletic contests and school performances.
Both motions were made, seconded and carried without recorded opposition. Board members treated the votes as routine annual actions required by state statute. Staff noted no signatures are required on the form beyond the motion language and that the motion follows a standard state-prescribed wording.
