Byron City Council reviews zoning regulations, asks attorney to revise Appendix A

Byron City Council met in a work session Dec. 12, 2023, in the Office of the Mayor to review Appendix A — the city's Land Development, Zoning Ordinances and Subdivision Regulations, Part IV: Zoning Regulations. The session began at 12:00 p.m. with lunch served and ended at 5:15 p.m.
The council discussed a range of technical and policy details in Appendix A, including plan submission requirements; whether fence heights for homeowners backing onto I-75 should require variances; the list of zoning districts (A-1, R-1, R-2, R-3, C-1, C-2, C-3, I-1) and the uses permitted in each; lot and home size standards; and special exceptions. The session also covered telecommunication tower heights, sidewalk standards and off-street parking requirements.
No formal motions or votes were recorded in the work session summary. Council members and staff examined specific regulatory language and implementation details but did not adopt amendments on the record during the session. The council directed a next step: the city attorney was asked to update the Appendix A draft based on the discussion and present the revised text for review at a follow-up work session scheduled prior to Jan. 8.
Attendance was recorded as Mayor Michael Chidester and Council Members James Richardson, Rusty Adams, Michael Chumbley, Chris Hodges and Alan Dorsey; City Administrator Tiffany Sandefur, Deputy Clerk Pam Flournoy and City Attorney Brian Causey were also present. The meeting was held in the Office of the Mayor on the second floor of the Municipal Complex.
The council plans to continue review of the zoning regulations at the next work session; the city attorney's revised draft will be the primary item for that meeting.
