On Dec. 28, 2023, the City of Byron mayor and council met in a work session in the mayor’s office to review Appendix A of the city’s Land Development, Zoning Ordinances and Subdivision Regulations, Part IV: Zoning Regulations. The session began at 9:00 a.m. with breakfast and concluded at 1:55 p.m.
Mayor Michael Chidester and council members examined a range of zoning provisions, focusing on plan submission requirements, permitted uses and dimensional standards across the city’s zoning districts (A-1, R-1, R-2, R-3, C-1, C-2, C-3 and I-1). The review covered lot-size and home-size limits, special exceptions and language that would clarify administrative expectations for applicants.
Council members discussed an exemption for fence heights for homeowners whose properties back up to Interstate 75, considering language that would allow such property owners to install fences without seeking a variance. The session also addressed technical standards including allowable heights for telecommunications structures, sidewalk requirements and off-street parking minimums.
City Administrator Tiffany Sandefur participated in the review of the technical provisions, and City Attorney Brian Causey was assigned to update the Appendix A text to reflect the council’s direction. The council scheduled a follow-up work session for Jan. 3 at 2:00 p.m. to review the revised section.
The meeting record lists attendees as Mayor Michael Chidester; Council Members James Richardson, Rusty Adams, Michael Chumbley, Chris Hodges and Alan Dorsey; City Administrator Tiffany Sandefur; City Attorney Brian Causey; and City Clerk Telina Allred, who recorded the session.
