Byron mayor and council review zoning regulations, ask attorney to update code

At a Jan. 25 work session, Byron officials continued a line-by-line review of Appendix A (Land Development, Part IV Zoning Regulations), debated lighting, sidewalks, industrial truck-parking standards and fence-height exceptions, and requested first readings on ICC property maintenance codes and a historic-district overlay.
The City of Byron’s mayor and council spent their Jan. 25 work session continuing a review of Appendix A of the Land Development code, focusing on how the city will reference the International Building Code and on several zoning details that could change standards for lighting, sidewalks, industrial parking and fences.
Mayor Michael Chidester and council members examined proposed language for commercial districts (C-1, C-2, C-3), discussed how lighting requirements should be applied in industrial I-1 zones and adjacent residential areas, and reviewed whether commercial properties should be required to provide sidewalks in front of their buildings. The council also questioned subsection (d) of the I-1 permitted uses about truck parking, limits on the number of parked vehicles, and gate-size standards, and ran another review of permitted uses and exceptions to ensure consistency.
City Administrator Tiffany Sandefur asked that staff prepare a first reading for the next council meeting to adopt or reference ICC property maintenance codes. Sandefur also requested a first reading for a proposed historic-district overlay and said she and City Attorney Brian Causey would draft design standards to add to C-2 and return that language for council review.
The work session concluded at 11:09 a.m. The council directed City Attorney Brian Causey to update the remainder of the Land Development section consistent with the discussion and make that draft ready for final review at the next work session scheduled for Feb. 1 at 1:00 p.m. No formal votes or motions were recorded in the session minutes.
