Mayor announces Trader Joe’s will anchor JCU Gateway North; new economic development director named

Mayor Brennan told Council that Trader Joe’s has filed plans with the city building department to be the anchor tenant for the JCU Gateway North Project at Fairmount Circle, with an anticipated opening in fall 2026.
‘‘We are delighted that University Heights will be the site of the third Trader Joe's in Cuyahoga County,’’ Mayor Brennan said, noting the item was the result of multi‑year work with John Carroll University and recent zoning‑code progress that helped secure variances for the project.
The mayor also introduced Tessa Jackson as University Heights’ new Economic Development Director. The mayor said Jackson, who has previous experience as Economic Development Director for the city of Cleveland and degrees from Stanford and Berkeley, is already coordinating the comprehensive zoning code update and attended the September 30 town hall.
Council members noted the town hall drew about 120 residents and said further outreach will continue with a second town hall planned for Oct. 30.
