Urbana council withdraws rezoning request, holds first reading of tax budget and schedules special meeting

The Urbana City Council on May 19 removed Ordinance 4633-26 from consideration after the applicant withdrew its application to rezone five parcels from BR‑1/R‑3 to B‑2. Council member Ms. Truelove moved to withdraw the ordinance and the motion passed by roll call (all yes).
The council also held the first reading of Ordinance 4429-26, the city’s tax budget for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Director of Finance Matt Wellbaum said the tax budget establishes beginning balances and estimated revenues and must be approved by July 15 and submitted to the county auditor by July 20. Wellbaum said the budget reflects roughly a 2% increase in estimated revenues versus the last recorded year and explained that the General Fund Charges for Services account includes items such as park fees, ambulance fees, cable franchise revenue and school resource officer contracts.
Council members agreed to hold a special meeting on June 9 to continue zoning efforts; the special meeting passed by roll call (7–0). Council adjourned at 7:43 p.m.; the next scheduled regular meeting is June 2, 2026.
