Needham Revitalization Trust Fund sets July 19 mural unveiling, updates banners, bench, website and outreach

The Town of Needham Revitalization Trust Fund met June 25 and set a schedule for summer placemaking work while deferring formal approval of May minutes because the meeting lacked a quorum.

Chair opened the meeting by noting the session was being recorded and that the committee did not have the four members required to vote on the May 2026 minutes; she said the minutes' approval will be postponed to the August meeting. Later in the session a committee member moved to adjourn and the meeting was closed for the summer.

The committee received a series of operational updates. The chair said the Needham Heights banners are in hand and that installation will be coordinated in the coming weeks; she also thanked Greyar, the sponsor for the banner, and noted the new nearby building "will have as I understand 189 rental units," a change she said will add vitality to the Heights area. "They will go up in Needham Heights and the parking lot behind Blue," the chair said.

Committee members also discussed a memorial bench for Fred Cressy. The chair said the "Cressy bench" is scheduled to ship in the first week of July and will be assembled by volunteers before placement in front of Starbucks to add seating in the commercial area.

On fundraising and outreach, the committee agreed to recruit banner sponsors to meet contract obligations for the banner and flag program. The chair proposed small-group trainings over the next two months to help members solicit donations and said a Facebook campaign will be part of a multi-level outreach effort in July and August.

The trust fund also plans a website refresh. The chair said she expects to convene committee members, including Rich and Joan, during July to produce structural concepts for a redesigned homepage with an intended rollout into September. "We'll get together and do the committee work to be able to put together some structure that would redesign the homepage," she said.

Event planning took up the latter portion of the meeting. The committee scheduled an unveiling for the Baker mural at 10:00 a.m. on July 19. Members discussed dates to avoid conflicts (including the July Fourth weekend) and noted the difficulty of contacting descendants or honorees. The chair said she will prepare promotion materials for the July 19 unveiling and distribute them in the trust fund newsletter.

Jessica, a committee member, described research for profiles tied to the "Reading to the World" program and recommended Allison Jones as a strong candidate to profile; she characterized Jones as "one of the most influential casting directors in Hollywood" and said she will continue outreach to secure participation or identify alternatives. Committee members discussed other possible subjects for a multi-person mural (Ben Carlin, John Slatterie, Elizabeth Hutter, and others) and cautioned that including more than three or four people would complicate scheduling and logistics.

Members discussed using alumni networks and Facebook posts to locate potential honorees and the chair offered to contact a local lead (Michael Niden) who might connect the committee to high-profile former residents. The chair also reported that a reprint of a legacy banner has been dropped off at PSAB to provide visibility in July while the group raises roughly $800–$900 to produce a new NCRTF banner.

The chair said she visited possible bench sites along the AMD path at a resident's request and will bring proposed locations to the Department of Public Works for approval before proceeding. The committee agreed to assemble a small workgroup to implement the homepage redesign and program rollouts and members were invited to send additional ideas by email.

The meeting concluded with the chair confirming the July 19 mural unveiling promotion and reminding members the next regular meeting is scheduled for August 27.
