Herbie’s Burgers gets approval for roof vent; board asks owner to revise sign plan for historic district

The Design Review Board approved a roof exhaustion vent for Herbie’s Burgers (33 Filus Street) on Nov. 19 but declined to approve the proposed internally backlit rectangular sign, directing the owner to return with revised signage plans.
Owner Aaron Wilson explained the exhaust hood was originally routed through a wall and then the roof; the board expressed no objection to the roof vent through the roof and approved that element. Members raised concerns about the proposed 72-by-30 internally lit LED box sign and the sign’s height above the awning, saying internally backlit box signs are not appropriate in the historic district. The board suggested alternatives including a circular (48-inch) sign to match the applicant’s other locations, a sign placed between the door and window on the brick, halo-lit channel letters, or a sign lit with an external gooseneck fixture. The applicant agreed to remove the in-window neon and re-evaluate window decals that might exceed the 30% allowance for the single window.
Board members encouraged the owner to bring mockups and lighting options; they suggested the circular logo used at other stores would likely be acceptable in the proposed wall location. One board member made the motion to approve the roof vent only; it was seconded and passed. The owner was asked to submit revised sign details for the next available agenda (the board noted there was one meeting remaining before year-end).
