The Worcester City Public Works Subcommittee voted Wednesday to add a sidewalk on Moa Street to the city’s sidewalk list after DPW identified the segment as a Safe Routes to School priority for West Tab Elementary.
DPW staff said the school’s Safe Routes plan listed the Moa Street segment as the top improvement and that available sidewalk-contract funds (about $85,500 remaining) would cover the estimated construction cost (about $83,600). The department recommended adding the sidewalk to the city’s project list and waving the betterment assessment to abutters given the school-safety benefits.
Petitioner Roco Dealia described photographs of children forced to walk in the road during poor winter plowing and said the sidewalk would make the route safer for students. A resident raised a driveway‑accommodation question; DPW said engineers would work with the homeowner to accommodate the driveway and avoid taking private property.
The committee approved the recommendation by roll call (Councilors Mitra, Folo and Chair Economu voting yes). DPW indicated the project would be scheduled within the current sidewalk contract if funding and prioritization permit.
Next steps: DPW will proceed with project planning, address driveway accommodations in design, and schedule construction consistent with the sidewalk contract.
