The Lancaster County Board of Equalization on May 5 approved a slate of motor vehicle tax exemption applications from local churches and nonprofit organizations, and completed routine procedural business, voting unanimously on each item.
Commissioner Christa Yoakum, chair, called the meeting to order at 10:46 a.m. and the County Clerk announced compliance with the Nebraska Open Meetings Act. The board first approved the minutes of its April 21, 2026 meeting after a motion from Commissioner Sean Flowerday and a second from Commissioner Rick Vest; the motion passed 5-0.
The board then approved additions and deductions to the county tax assessment rolls. Commissioner Sean Flowerday moved and Commissioner Chelsea Johnson seconded the motion to approve those adjustments; the board voted 5-0 to adopt them.
The board opened a public hearing on motor vehicle tax exemption applications submitted by a group of churches and nonprofit service providers. The applications listed on the agenda included: Slavic Christian Church; American National Red Cross; First Slavic Baptist Church; Redeemer Lutheran Church; VSL Lincoln Sumner LLC; VSL Lincoln Southlake LLC; St. Teresa Catholic Church of Lincoln; Grace Lutheran Church; Cultivate Church; Nebraska Community Blood Bank; Lincoln Christian Fellowship; Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska Inc.; and Vital Services Inc. Chair Yoakum opened and then closed the hearing after no members of the public appeared to speak.
As the public hearing action item, Commissioner Matt Schulte moved to approve the motor vehicle tax exemption applications; Commissioner Sean Flowerday seconded. The motion carried 5-0.
The agenda provided a public comment period for matters not on the agenda; no one appeared to speak. Commissioner Sean Flowerday moved to adjourn the meeting and Commissioner Chelsea Johnson seconded; the board adjourned at 10:48 a.m. by unanimous vote.
The actions taken at the May 5 meeting were procedural approvals and the authorization of the listed exemptions; no additional testimony or evidence was accepted during the action item because the public hearing had been closed prior to the vote.
