State Fair outlines animal-health preparedness as entries open July 1

Agriculture staff briefed the Nebraska State Fair Board on disease-preparedness efforts and entry timelines at the June 19 meeting.
Dawn Caldwell deferred to Vaughn Sievers, who discussed exhibitor education and communication about livestock infractions and expectations. Committee members reported participation in meetings addressing foot-and-mouth disease preparedness, vesicular stomatitis, Asian longhorned tick concerns and New World screwworm monitoring; future educational meetings on animal-disease response protocols were planned.
Staff reminded board members that entries open July 1, animal nomination deadlines were June 15 and entries close Aug. 10. Ryan Hassebrook reported that more than 5,000 animals are expected to be eligible for participation this year.
What this means: The board heard coordinative steps aimed at reducing disease risk and ensuring exhibitors understand rules and entry timelines before the Fair.
Next steps: Staff will schedule follow-up educational meetings on disease response protocols and continue outreach to FFA and 4-H systems ahead of July 1 entry opening.
