Board roundup: veterans funding pledge, denied vendor request, settlement authorization and hiring move

At its May 26 meeting the Pottawattamie County Board pledged $5,000 to veterans banners contingent on outside fundraising, denied a grounds-use request from KAMT vendors, authorized an ISAC settlement, extended a $90,000 provisional offer for Finance and Budget Director and heard a study session on courthouse clerks’ pay scales.
The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors took several additional actions May 26 beyond routine minutes and plat approvals.
Funding pledge for veterans banners: On a motion by Supervisor Tim Wichman, seconded by Jeff Jorgensen, the board agreed to provide $5,000 from gaming funds to the Iowa Veterans Foundation for banners on Veterans Memorial Highway, contingent on the Foundation first raising $25,000. The vote was unanimous.
Denied grounds use: The board denied an application to use county grounds for KAMT Agua Fresca and Strawberry Lemonade on a motion by Tim Wichman, seconded by Jeff Jorgensen. The minutes record the denial as the board’s action.
Personnel filings and hiring: The board received and filed salary actions, including the employment of Steven Saunders as a part-time youth corrections worker and the hiring of Ava Jensen as a Natural Areas Management seasonal technician intern. Later in the meeting the board unanimously approved a provisional offer of employment of $90,000 for the Finance and Budget Director position to Applicant A (motion by Susan Miller; second by Keith Jones).
Settlement authorized after closed session: The board entered closed session under Iowa Code §21.5(1)(c) to discuss pending or potential litigation, returned to open session, and authorized ISAC to settle claim number 040555002223 as discussed in closed session. Roll calls for closed-session motions are recorded as AYES: Shea, Wichman, Miller, Jorgensen, Jones.
Study session: Jasmine Elmore, director of human resources, led a study-session discussion about dissolving the Courthouse Clerks union’s pay scale; the minutes record the discussion as information only and note no action was taken.
Adjournment: The board adjourned at 12:17 p.m. on a motion by Keith Jones, seconded by Jeff Jorgensen.
