Committee members laid out three funding options: spend only the money already in the fireworks account and forgo the rest; transfer the assigned funds and raise the remaining amount by taxation; or transfer the assigned funds, raise a smaller tax amount and draw the gap from another town fund. Members repeatedly emphasized transparency and voter awareness when taxpayer dollars are involved.
One member urged the board to write warrant language that makes the source of funds clear before town meeting, saying that raising money by taxation better informs residents of the cost than quietly drawing from the unassigned fund. Others countered that the town has historically relied on a mix of donations and assigned funds and suggested stronger outreach to solicit private donations in the year ahead.
After extended discussion and exchanges, the committee conducted a straw poll that, for the purpose of the upcoming warrant, favored transferring the $3,510 from the assigned fireworks account and raising the remainder by taxation so voters can decide at town meeting.
The committee asked staff to prepare warrant language reflecting that option and to revisit the issue at the final reading next week. No formal vote on the fireworks appropriation was recorded during the March 31 session.
