Union City Borough Council clears $2,690 lien, approves canoe launch and seven Renaissance grants

Union City Borough Council unanimously approved several routine and project-related measures at its Aug. 27 meeting, including satisfaction of a lien on a Landbank property, a contract award for a canoe/kayak launch, the award of seven Renaissance grants and acceptance of a regional audit.

The council approved a motion to remove and satisfy a borough lien of approximately $2,690 on the Erie County Landbank property at 121 East High Street after the Landbank requested removal of the lien. Councilor Kerns moved the measure and Councilor Steadman seconded; the motion carried unanimously among those present.

Council members reviewed two vendor quotes for installing a canoe and kayak launch at the designated area of the American Legion ball field. Because the low quote of $16,679 from Construction Services of PA fell below the borough’s $23,200 bidding threshold, bids were not required; the council accepted that quote contingent on receipt of an easement from the American Legion.

The council also approved seven Renaissance grant applications recommended for the 2024–2025 grant period. Manager Cindy Wells reported the seven projects totaled $60,606 and requested $23,600 in Renaissance funds; she said $90,547.35 remained available in the Renaissance account. The motion to award the requested $23,600 was approved unanimously.

Finally, Councilor Osborn moved and Councilor Steadman seconded a resolution accepting the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) audit report that had been reviewed and accepted by COG members; the resolution carried unanimously.

Other procedural business at the meeting included approval of the agenda, minutes and routine bills. The council adjourned at 6:19 p.m.

Next steps: the canoe/kayak launch contract award is contingent on the American Legion granting an easement; the Renaissance awards will be administered per borough procedures and available fund balances.
