Deephaven council approves consent agenda, tables final audit approval and directs engineering interviews

The Deephaven City Council on April 21 approved its consent agenda covering routine minutes, claims, event permits, multiple capital items and a conditional employment offer, heard an audit presentation from Abdo auditor Bonnie Schwieger and directed staff to begin formal interviews with two engineering firms recommended by committee.
Councilmember Tony Jewett moved and Councilmember Emily Scherschligt seconded approval of the consent agenda, which included the April 7 minutes, verified claims and the first-quarter financial report; special-event and liquor permits; televising; Local Board of Appeal and Equalization minutes; basketball court resurfacing; boat ramp repair; fountain replacement; a Safeassure agreement; and the offer of conditional employment for Zach Janisch. The motion carried according to the minutes.
Auditor Bonnie Schwieger presented the results of the 2024 audit and answered council questions. After discussion, the council decided to table formal approval of the audit until a final draft is available for review, leaving the audit in review status pending clerical or substantive updates.
Under new business, Councilmember John Studer moved and Councilmember Tom Erdmann seconded a motion to proceed with formal interviews of Stantec and Bolton and Menk for engineering services; the motion passed with unanimous support from Mayor Kent Carlson and all councilmembers (5-0).
In council reports, Mayor Carlson said the city will schedule discussions this year on a police union negotiation request; Councilmember Scherschligt said the Parks Committee will present on buckthorn removal and the Events Committee is planning the city’s quasquicentennial celebration; Councilmember Jewett described recent Fire Relief meeting activity and expected a Fire Chief presentation on budget impacts; Councilmember Studer noted plans to repair the Carson Bay ramp; and Councilmember Erdmann summarized a Planning Commission conversation that addressed reasons a council decision might differ from a commission vote. The meeting adjourned at 8:08 p.m.
The minutes record routine departmental updates from police, the Excelsior Fire District and public works and note Finance Director Andrew Keller’s involvement in the audit process.
