Mayor Pro Tim Green asked the council to consider a demonstration from a vendor whose AI software automates permit plan checks and generates exception reports that reviewers can use to prioritize review work.
Green said the product has been used by other Texas cities and that the Manville permit director reported one complex plan review finished in about 25 minutes during a demonstration. "What the AI software does, it goes and it looks at all the city codes and it evaluates that plan and it makes sure or compare that plan to make sure it's within specs and then it provides a uh exception report," Green said. Council members asked staff to invite the vendor for a formal presentation, request cost estimates and confirm integration details with the Tyler Technologies permitting system the city is migrating to.
Staff and council emphasized that the intent is to free staff from repetitive checks, not to eliminate positions, and asked for a follow-up presentation including price, implementation timeline and expected labor savings.
