Avon residents tell council Duke Energy representatives told homeowners trees would be removed

"They started off by telling them that the county had ordered energy to remove those trees and that the county would reimburse the homeowners for that expense," said resident Dave Hops, who said he spoke with several neighbors and wants the council to follow up. Hops said he did not believe the county had ordered removal and asked town staff to clarify the scope of any work and what property encroachments — if any — would require compensation.
Another resident, Marvin Selva, said a Duke Energy representative provided a pamphlet with job number 13853 and indicated poles would be replaced and trees removed. Selva said he saw tags marking trees "remove" and that the representative described moving poles by "13 to 20 feet" or "18 to 30 ft" and mentioned a 50-foot easement; Selva said he measured and that proposed changes appeared to extend into the berm and that the tree removals would be significant.
Both speakers said communication from the utility had been confusing: they reported conflicting directions about whether sidewalks and poles would be moved east or west and said contacts had indicated the county would pay for encroachment — a statement the residents disputed.
Council members did not provide a substantive policy response during the public comment period. At the meeting's close, a council member asked staffer Steve to attend a Duke Energy meeting to address the residents' concerns; Steve confirmed he would attend.
