Tree Commission tables one removal request, approves another as questions remain about $900,000 grant

The Port Clinton Tree Commission met on June 10, 2025, and tabled one tree-removal request while approving another as commissioners continued to seek details about a $900,000 federal grant and plans for replacing removed trees. Commissioner Roger Domokos moved to table the request filed by Georgia Parker for 323 E 2nd St.; Commissioner Jerry Tarolli seconded the motion and Domokos said he would speak with the homeowner for clarification. The motion was tabled.
Commissioner Jerry Tarolli moved to approve the removal request submitted by Susan Risner for 302 Walnut St.; Commissioner Lisa Bodi seconded the motion and the commission approved the request (vote tally not specified).
During the commissioners’ report, Commissioner Larry Holman said three trees provided by the county have been planted and that the commission is awaiting more information on a $900,000 federal grant. Holman reported that $250,000 of the grant funds had already been spent to remove city trees and said questions remain about the availability of the remaining funds and whether the commission can hire an arborist or draw on water-line funding for tree replacement. Members also signed a thank-you card for an Elks donation of two trees.
Under old business, Commissioner Roger Domokos reported several dead trees — one on 2nd Street and two in Adam's St. Park — and commissioners discussed the future of arbor vitae held in town pots. Commissioner Holman said he had won a replacement tree that he was considering planting at the Senior Center or in Adam's St. Park.
Commissioners also raised concerns about destructive pests, naming spotted lanternflies, biting ants, and emerald ash borers, and noted a possibility discussed at the meeting that such pests could be spreading on railroad cars. No members of the public spoke during the public-comment portion of the meeting. The commission set its next meeting for July 8, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. and recessed after a motion to adjourn by Commissioner Jerry Tarolli, seconded by Commissioner Lisa Bodi.
