Library reports strong summer participation, new tool-reservation system and a temporary closure after a pipe burst

Library staff reported robust summer activity and several operational changes during the Friends of the Library board meeting. Cindy presented the programming recap, saying, "We had over 400 kids, teens and adults participate" in the summer reading program and that the library’s meal program served a large number of meals this season (the transcript reads "over 7 45 meals" and staff context supports an interpretation of about 745 meals; see clarifying details).

Staff listed program highlights including music workshops, a nutrition workshop, upcycled crafts and a puppet show that closed summer activities on Aug. 2. Cindy described expanded lunch service for children and teens on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and said the library served substantially more meals than last year. The library also rolled out a reservation feature for the tool library, allowing patrons to view the catalog online, reserve items and pick them up at the desk outside standard open hours.

Staff reviewed upcoming events: the library’s 20th-anniversary celebration is scheduled for Aug. 30 (noted in the meeting as 1–3 p.m.), a Hispanic Heritage event is scheduled for Sept. 19 (staff said 3–5 p.m.), the Booktacular haunted-house event is planned for Oct. 31, and the library’s Hoopla event with a Santa visit is set for Dec. 6.

Operations update: staff reported a pipe burst in the parking-lot plumbing that required the library to close for repairs yesterday and for part of the current day; repairs were reported complete and the library was scheduled to reopen the next day. Board members and staff also discussed volunteer recruitment for the bookstore and the possibility of evening volunteer shifts; staff said volunteers are being recruited and some existing volunteers prefer daytime hours.
