Plan commission approves helistop at Fire Station 35 for Air Methods

Blanca Perez of Planning and Inspections presented the special‑permit application for the existing 2.87‑acre site (zoned C‑4) and said the proposal retains the existing 8,737‑square‑foot fire station, adds the helistop, provides 24 parking spaces and three bicycle spaces, and routes stormwater by surface flow to a regional pond. Notices were mailed to 14 properties within 300 feet on June 18, 2026; no responses in support or opposition had been received as of that date.
Jared Harris of Air Methods, the applicant and aircraft operator, said the company seeks to relocate flight operations from the airport to the fire station "for quicker response times and centralized locations for sick and injured patients." Harris told the commission Air Methods agreed with all staff comments.
The public hearing was opened and closed with no public speakers, and the commission approved the special permit and site plan by voice vote. The transcript does not show a roll‑call vote tally. The approval allows Air Methods to construct and operate the helistop subject to any standard conditions in the approved detailed site development plan.
