Board approves used-bus purchase and awards $2.47M millwork contract for new high school

The Frederick County School Board on June 16 approved two procurement items the board described as fitting within previously approved funding.
On a motion from the finance committee, the board authorized use of $150,000 in unobligated school operating funds to purchase 15 used school buses from Prince William County Public Schools. Staff said the acquired buses have average mileage of roughly 80,000–100,000 miles and will fill an immediate fleet need; board members noted the purchase capitalizes on an unusual opportunity to acquire vehicles at a lower price than new purchases.
Separately, during the building-and-grounds portion of the meeting, the board approved a contract award to Diversified Education Systems Inc. for casework and millwork for the fourth high school construction project in the amount of $2,470,500. Board members emphasized this contract was included in the county-approved construction budget and not an additional appropriation.
Board members asked that staff continue to align procurement and capital projects with the division’s CIP and present follow-up on lifecycle costs, particularly for fields and long-term maintenance as turf and other upgrades are considered.
The board approved both actions by voice vote; staff will coordinate next steps with the transportation and facilities offices.
