Gregg County Commissioners on June 30 approved a $150,000 transfer from jail salaries to sheriff operations overtime to cover higher-than-expected overtime costs in the county jail.
Sheriff reported that the jail population stood at 757 inmates with one person hospitalized and that the department currently has 11 jailer vacancies and five deputy openings. "We have 757 inmates with one in the hospital. We currently have 11 jailer openings and five deputy openings," the sheriff said while asking for the transfer. The court approved the transfer by motion.
The court also approved the sheriff’s request to utilize inmate labor for nonprofit organizations under Texas Code of Criminal Procedure article 43.10 for specified dates (October 27 and 29 and November 5, 10 and 12, 2026) to assist with Christmas set-up at the county museum. The sheriff asked for the authorization and court members thanked staff for the assistance.
