School board upholds superintendent personnel recommendations, including teacher license revocation

The board moved into closed session earlier in the evening "to hold an administrative hearing regarding a personnel matter involving a petition for the revocation of a teacher's license in accordance with Virginia Administrative Code 8VAC20-23-720," a motion read at the meeting. After returning to open session the board certified the closed session and took five motions tied to personnel and student cases.
Board members voted to uphold the superintendent’s recommendation for license revocation and authorized the board chair to communicate the decision in writing to the employee and the Virginia Department of Education. A single board member recorded an abstention on the license-revocation motion; the chair announced the motion passes.
The board also approved superintendent-recommended personnel actions, including administrative appointments and support-staff hires; upheld hearing-officer recommendations from the student conduct and support committee in multiple student cases; approved the release of one student from compulsory attendance; and approved assistant superintendent contracts. Each motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The board did not discuss those individual cases in open session, citing the statutory exemptions the board invoked when it recessed into closed session. Board members framed the actions as the conclusion of deliberations that took place under the legal standards cited in the original motion.
The board’s formal motions will be recorded in the official written notice to affected employees and in the division’s administrative records. The chair was directed to transmit the license-related paperwork to the Virginia Department of Education as required.
The meeting then proceeded with recognitions and other agenda items.
