Union County accepts state grant for four School Resource Officers; sheriff reports outreach successes

Union County Council unanimously approved acceptance of a Department of Public Safety grant that will fully reimburse salary, fringe benefits and equipment costs for four School Resource Officers for the 2024–2025 school year.
Councilman Danny Bright moved to dispense with referring the award to committee and to accept it; Councilman John Flood seconded and the motion passed without objection. The grant requires no county match and officials said the county has received similar funding in prior years.
Sheriff Bailey briefed the council on recent outreach: an Explorer Program information session running until 7:00 p.m., distribution of 750 bookbags at the Union County Fairgrounds with additional supplies sent to schools for students in need, and a county Jamboree that drew teams from seven schools. Bailey thanked the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office for providing a helicopter photo opportunity at the bookbag event.
Council members thanked the sheriff’s office for the outreach and community engagement. The grant acceptance was approved unanimously; no conditions or additional appropriations were recorded during the Aug. 13 meeting.
