At its June 17 meeting Union County Council filled numerous vacancies across county boards and commissions. The meeting record lists multiple appointments by district and board: Airport Commission (appointments included David Parks, John McKnight, Eddie Williams, Michael Gregory); Fair Board (Kelly Stewart, Tommy Ford — approved with one opposing vote, Mark Wade, James McNeil); Planning Commission (Lewis Jeter, Timika Wilson, Joey Mayes, Latasha Savage); Library Board (Jennifer Roark, Bill Rochester, Scott Parker, Curtis Sims); and several volunteer fire department boards (multiple at-large appointments across Bonham, Buffalo, Carlisle, Cross Keys, Kelly Kelton, Philippi and others).
Most appointments carried unanimously after recommendation and second; exceptions noted in the minutes included a recorded opposition by Councilman Glenn to one Fair Board appointment (Tommy Ford) and a withdrawn recommendation for an Airport Commission appointment (William "Bill" Strickland) after concerns were raised about his employment at the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Why it matters: Boards and commissions carry out key local duties — from airport oversight to planning and fair operations — and filling vacancies restores their ability to act. Minutes record candidate names and the voting outcomes for transparency and future reference.
What’s next: Newly appointed members will be notified and will assume responsibilities per each board’s rules. The minutes list the appointees and voting records for the official appointment roster.
