Union County Council reorganizes committees, approves routine expenses and schedule changes

Union County Council convened Jan. 14 in the Grand Jury Room of the Union County Courthouse and completed organizational and procedural business, including leadership appointments, contingency spending, and scheduling changes.
Chairman Phillip G. Russell II opened the meeting at 5:30 p.m., and the Council approved the Dec. 10 minutes after a motion by Vice Chair David Sinclair and a second from Councilman John Flood. The Council reappointed Sinclair as Vice Chair and Danny Bright as Chaplain and confirmed memberships and chairmanships for standing committees covering administration and finance, public works, personnel, public health and social services, law enforcement and recreation, and planning and development. All committee confirmations were adopted by unanimous vote.
Council approved two small expenditures from the Council Contingency Fund: $175.99 for a crystal plaque honoring former Clerk of Court Melanie Lawson and $58.99 for refreshments for the swearing-in ceremony. Both expenses passed on a unanimous vote.
On scheduling, Council moved the Feb. 11, 2025 regular meeting from 210 W. Main St. to 103 W. Main St., and rescheduled the June 10, 2025 meeting to June 17, 2025 to accommodate budget sessions. Both motions passed unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
