Supervisor’s report: jail addition on schedule; Buffalo Mill public hearing set for Sept. 24

Chairman Phillip G. Russell, II summarized the supervisor’s report during the Sept. 10 meeting, giving council members updates on several county projects and upcoming events.
Russell said the jail addition project is on schedule and the county hopes to hold an open house in December. A public hearing on the Buffalo Mill project is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Buffalo Fire Department; environmental engineers will be present to explain findings and the removal process. Chairman Russell said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit for Buffalo Mill Pond remains pending because engineers submitted additional requested information and ARC has been notified to continue the process.
Russell told council that four Union County gateway signs costing $32,400 should be installed within three to four weeks. He also reported that the Goldville (Goshen Hill) Fire Station is under construction and that a Bonham aerial truck has been ordered. Work on a joint maintenance shop project is progressing with planning meetings to refine costs; Russell said the joint city-county target is a $4 million budget and the goal is to stay below that amount.
Architects are drawing plans for a proposed new animal shelter designed to hold more than 100 dogs and about 30 cats; staff are considering relocating the shelter from its current site. The next county cleanup day is scheduled for Oct. 4, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Santuc Recycling Center.
Council later confirmed county government office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
