Albemarle County electoral board approves revised list of election chiefs and holds closed session on assignments

The Albemarle County Electoral Board voted July 2 to approve a revised list of officers of election, including chiefs and assistant chiefs, and convened a closed session to discuss the performance of election workers and assignments for polling places ahead of the Aug. 4 dual primary.

“My name is Bucky Wolch. Here with me is Valerie Dormandy,” one board member said at the start of the called meeting, noting that the two present constituted a quorum and that colleague Jim Heilman was nearby. The board first took steps to move into a closed meeting pursuant to a statutory exemption cited on the record.

A motion recorded on the transcript said the closed meeting was being held “pursuant to section 2.2711A of the Code of Virginia under Subsection 1” to discuss officers’ performance and assignments to public places; members approved that motion by voice vote.

After the closed session, the board voted to certify by recorded vote that only matters lawfully exempted under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act were discussed. The board then approved the list of officers of election — chiefs and assistant chiefs — “as modified” during the closed session, a motion the minutes show passed with no opposition.

A member raised a separate concern about a discrepancy in the record from a previous meeting, saying they had noted six approvals in their notes but could find only five on the list; the board said it would review the recording to clarify that inconsistency. No additional details about the identity of the missing appointment were provided during the meeting.

The board scheduled its next meeting for next Thursday at 9:00 in the other room and adjourned at 10:13.
