Councilwoman Susan Starkey, representing Davie’s District 3, announced a series of parks improvements, summer events and safety reminders for residents.
Starkey said town staff planted 62 native and Florida-friendly trees and more than 150 shrubs to enhance landscaping, provide future shade and support local wildlife. She also noted the town expanded youth and adult sports offerings at Pine Island Park Sports Complex last year and added two artificial turf fields to improve program playability.
The councilwoman promoted the town’s Fun on the Fourth Independence Day celebration at Pine Island Park, which she said will include live music, slides, food trucks, a drone show and a fireworks finale. She said pre-registration is required and that gates will open at 6:00 p.m.
Starkey encouraged families to attend free summer pool parties on July 11 at the Betty Booth Roberts Pool and on July 18 at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center from 1:00 to 4:00. She highlighted available swim lessons and a drowning-prevention initiative aimed at keeping young children safer in the water.
On youth athletics, Starkey announced registration is open through July 19, 2026, for flag football for children ages 3 to 14 and cheerleading for children ages 4 to 10; the programs are scheduled to run from August through October.
Marking July as Parks and Recreation and Cultural Arts Month, Starkey described the year’s theme, “The Power of the Parks and Recreation,” and listed free activities for all ages and abilities, including senior lunches, clogging classes, chess classes and fitness training. She said those activities will be hosted at various town parks and facilities.
Starkey closed with safety reminders: keep pets on short leashes, do not feed wildlife such as alligators or coyotes, and call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Wildlife Alert Hotline to report a nuisance alligator.
For more information on programs, events and registration, Starkey directed residents to the Town of Davie website.
