Daniels County OKs applying for state historic‑preservation grant for courthouse repairs

Daniels County commissioners voted Dec. 15 to pursue a State Historic Preservation Office grant to address structural and preservation needs at the county courthouse.
Staff told the commission the grant application is resource‑intensive — preparation work may cost about $8,500 — but the grant can cover major restoration work if successful. Commissioners discussed likely project elements such as roof replacement, balcony stabilization and siding repair and agreed to prepare cost estimates and a consolidated bid package to manage the work if funded.
According to staff, some historic preservation awards can be 100% grant funds for eligible work; other program offerings allow partial matching where a match of about 20% may be required depending on the specific award and scope. Commissioners asked the county engineer and building staff to scan the site, prepare estimates and return with a formal application packet early next year.
The commission approved the motion to apply and delegated authority to staff to gather bid estimates and signatures for the application when it is ready. If awarded, the grant would fund preservation work intended to extend the courthouse’s usable life and reduce future emergency repairs.
