Daniels County commissioners voted Dec. 15 to sign a letter of intent to secure a new mower and discussed financing and timing for a tractor and a possible used excavator.
The commission approved the mower intent to try to lock price and delivery; staff warned some vendors estimate delivery as late as July and that warranty and optional extended‑warranty choices will be available within 90 days of delivery. Commissioners said the mower is a high priority for road maintenance and that a tractor and backhoe will follow in budget planning.
The board also reviewed an offer to buy a used excavator from a local dealer. Staff described the machine as in good working order and useful for ditching and culvert work but said that tractor and mower needs take precedence for next fiscal‑year budgeting. Commissioners discussed whether to reallocate culvert or bridge line items, use bridge funds, or finance purchases through bank loans or dealer financing that could split payments across fiscal years.
County staff outlined options to defer payment or arrange multi‑year financing and to sell older equipment to offset costs. Commissioners emphasized the need to secure lead times (some manufacturers are raising prices in the new year) and asked staff to return with concrete financing proposals and trade‑in values before finalizing purchases.
The commission instructed staff to prepare the formal purchase documents and financing estimates and to return for signatures and final appropriation actions.
