Daniels County commissioners voted Nov. 17 to authorize advertising and filling a 10-hour-per-week library story-hour position by reallocating part of an existing quarter-time allocation rather than adding new budgeted money.
The library director explained the change will reduce an incumbent employee’s hours (from 32–35 to about 27) and asked commissioners to document the staffing change; county legal counsel advised that any personnel reductions be documented in writing. Commissioners agreed to advertise the vacancy in-house first and approved the motion by voice vote.
During the same session the board heard an extended report about senior-center operations, cleaning schedules and local funding. Staff said Daniel's County tax support for the senior center has increased substantially in recent years and that federal and partner grants have declined, forcing program adjustments. Figures discussed in the meeting included the county’s local option and millage contributions that moved from near zero to several mills over a three-year period; staff and commissioners said precise dollar flows will be confirmed in budget work ahead of next year’s cycle.
Board of Health and public-health staff updated commissioners on a community health assessment (a small number of survey responses so far), immunization clinic work and concerns about certification for exercise-class instructors at the senior center. Commissioners asked staff to provide deliverables and budget impact figures during the next budget review.
Next steps: the library will post the position, collect applications and return a revised job description for commissioner signatures after the December meeting; staff will assemble clearer budget numbers for senior services to inform upcoming budget planning.
