Daniels County, city jointly appoint Jeremy Jones to new Public Safety Commission

The Daniels County Commission met in joint session with city officials on Nov. 17 to confirm appointments to a newly formed Public Safety Commission and voted to appoint Jeremy Jones as the at-large member.

The city had already appointed Kurt Nelson and the county had appointed Michael Lund; county commissioners moved to appoint Jeremy Jones and approved the motion by voice vote. Commissioners said the commission’s scope will be law-enforcement specific and that staff will provide copies of relevant state statutes and governing documents at the first meeting.

County legal counsel indicated the Montana Code Annotated includes sections that outline authority for county/city public-safety arrangements; staff agreed to assemble statute copies and a packet of deliverables for the commission’s initial meeting. By statute the commission must convene within 60 days, and participants said they will try to meet before Christmas. The board discussed administering oaths to new appointees and agreed the county attorney or designated official would handle swearing-in at the commission’s first session.

No formal objections were recorded during the vote, and the commissioners confirmed Councilman Seth Axman was absent due to a last-minute work conflict. The meeting’s organizers said they will circulate meeting logistics and materials by email to the appointees and staff ahead of the first session.

Next steps: staff will distribute statutory materials and proposed meeting dates; the county and city will coordinate the oath for newly appointed members at the commission’s initial meeting.
