Kettle River council adopts 2026 appointments, accepts state leave policy; tables several items

The Kettle River City Council on Jan. 6 adopted Resolution 2026-01 to keep the city’s 2026 appointments the same as 2025, accepted the new Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave policy, approved staff training, and tabled several operational purchases.
Resolution 2026-01 preserves current appointments including Acting Mayor (Councilor Elizabeth Mascarenas), the Moose Lake Star Gazette as official newspaper, First National Bank of Moose Lake as bank depository, Kennedy & Graven as city attorney, the mayor as Fire Commission representative, committee assignments, and CarlsonSV as the auditing firm. Councilor Marcia Sarvela moved to adopt the resolution; Councilor Miya Kohmetscher seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Councilors also moved to accept the Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave policy (motion by Councilor Miya Kohmetscher, seconded by Councilor Elizabeth Mascarenas), and to approve City Administrator Kathy Lake’s attendance at the MCFOA training March 24–27, 2026. Both motions carried on unanimous votes.
Operational items included tabling a replacement for the City Hall desktop computer pending quotes for a laptop versus desktop (motion to table by Councilor Kohmetscher) and tabling playground repairs (motion by Councilor Patricia Lund). The council also acknowledged that the old brush-rig truck will be sold via Moose-Bid auction and that a donation inquiry from the Cloquet American Legion about a bench requires more information before the council can draft an acceptance resolution.
The council adjourned at 8:33 p.m.; its next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
