The Maurice River Township Committee on Jan. 13 took several unanimous procedural actions ahead of its Jan. 16 meeting.
Deputy Mayor Joe Sterling moved — and Committeeman Ben Stowman seconded — to adopt a binding affordable-housing resolution at the Jan. 16 meeting; the motion passed with Sterling, Stowman and Mayor Ken Whildin voting yes. The committee agreed to introduce an ordinance establishing minimum stormwater-management requirements and penalties for major development; Mayor Ken Whildin said Township Engineer Tiffany Morrissey had included penalty language in the revised draft and the committee voted to introduce the ordinance on Jan. 16.
The committee approved Tri-County Sportsmen’s annual request for municipal support of 2025 events and to request EMT/OEM volunteer assistance, with volunteer support contingent on availability. It also voted to proceed with hiring to fill a Public Works laborer vacancy caused by retirement.
On maritime safety, the committee voted to send a letter to the U.S. Coast Guard after Mayor Whildin reported the East Point Lighthouse beacon had been out since Thanksgiving; a resident, Mr. Kumor of Heislerville, reminded the committee the light is an active navigational aid for recreational boaters.
The municipal clerk read and the committee adopted Resolution No. 35-2025 authorizing a closed executive session under the New Jersey Open Public Meetings Act (N.J.S.A. 10:4-12). The committee entered a closed session and later returned to regular session. The meeting concluded with a review of the Jan. 16 agenda and bills slated for approval and a unanimous motion to adjourn.
