Maurice River Committee reviews foreclosed properties, sets minimum bids and agrees to tax-related resolutions

Maurice River Township officials reviewed multiple properties acquired via foreclosure or quitclaim and made preliminary decisions on which parcels to auction and which to retain.
Mayor Ken Whildin walked the committee through several lots. For Block 280 Lot 3 and Block 320 Lot 163 the committee set a $15,000 minimum bid; for Block 309 Lot 1 members agreed on a $25,000 minimum bid. For Block 291 Lot 64, Block 263 Lot 6 and Block 305 Lot 7 the committee agreed to retain the parcels, citing NJDEP adjacency and access or survey concerns. Whildin noted Block 122 Lot 16 is not buildable and that NJDEP holds the right of first refusal for that parcel.
The committee also discussed resolutions to cancel taxes and lien balances on properties acquired by the township (including the Cheli property and two marinas) and agreed to place that resolution on the consent agenda for the Feb. 19 meeting. Separately, Whildin reported a successful 2025 tax appeal for the estate of Leon Whilden; the overpayment was applied to the first and second quarter taxes for 2026 and the committee agreed to bring a refund resolution forward.
Committee members further agreed to move forward with a resolution granting a full tax exemption and canceling 2026 taxes for a property belonging to a 100% permanently and totally disabled veteran.
Next steps: the listed resolutions will be included on the consent agenda at the Township Committee meeting on Thursday, Feb. 19, and the township will prepare auction logistics and minimum-bid notices for the lots designated for sale.
