Township committee refers state-model affordable-housing ordinance to Land Use Board

Mayor Ken Whildin and the Maurice River Township Committee on Feb. 17 referred a proposed ordinance to create a new Article 17, “Affordable Housing,” to the township Land Use Board for review.
Solicitor Justin White told the committee the ordinance is required by the state and is based on the state model ordinance, and that neighboring towns have adopted similar language. "This is an ordinance that the state requires from us as part of our Affordable Housing obligations," White said.
Committeeman Ben Stowman moved to refer the ordinance; Deputy Mayor Joseph Sterling seconded. The motion passed on a roll-call vote with Sterling, Stowman and Mayor Whildin voting aye and no nays recorded.
The referral means the Land Use Board will examine the ordinance for consistency with the township master plan and provide recommendations before the committee’s final action. The solicitor cited N.J.S.A. 40:55D-26, -62, -62.1 and -64 as the statutory basis for the referral requirement.
Next steps: the Land Use Board will review the draft ordinance at a future meeting and return its findings to the Township Committee ahead of any public hearings or adoption votes scheduled by the committee.
